Corus Steel Packaging Design Awards 2005: Students brand with steel
01 Jul 2005
This years briefs for the Corus Steel Packaging Design Awards address real issues that brand owners face. The briefs set to student were from Heinz, Bacardi Breezer and The Sanctuary. Heinz wanted students to create contemporary steel packaging for the re-launch of Heinz’s nutritious ‘Good Food Everyday’ soups. The Sanctuary wanted students to use steel as a primary component, create a special design for a special ‘gift’ edition of The Sanctuary’s current women’s product, the iconic Salt Scrub. And Bacardi Breezer challenged students to use the creative potential of steel, by creating a limited ‘fashion’ edition pack for Bacardi Breezer.
Winners:
The overall winner was Gary Meadowcraft from University College Falmouth for his design for Bacardi Breezer. Judge Pierpaolo Indelicato of Bacardi Breezer, who was part of the judging panel, said: “The entries displayed good creative flair with some challenging thoughts. I was pleased to see students challenging both the brand and the technical status quo. The winner displayed real creative thinking and the ability to get the brand’s value to come to life.”
The winners for the individual briefs were Krystal Bloxham from Somerset College of Arts and Technology for the Heinz brief and Alafuro Sikoki and Burcu Yancatarol from University of Arts for The Sanctuary brief.
Judge Lynda Relph-Knight, Design Week commented: “I have judged this category before and I was absolutely thrilled about the way the work has progressed in terms of quality, understanding and knowledge of both the brands and the markets they serve – markets that weren’t immediately relevant to students.”
The Awards were presented at the D&AD Awards Ceremony on the 30th of June 2005. Winning Students were awarded the D&AD Student Yellow Pencil, cash prizes and work experience at leading design agencies.
The Steel Packaging Design Awards (SPDA) are run as part of D&AD Student Awards and sponsored by Corus Packaging Plus. The Awards encourage students worldwide to develop innovative and daring packaging designs in steel and aim to raise the awareness of the creative potential of steel.
